New Mexico Secretary of State Joins Victor Reyes for Conversation on Voting Rights
They met for a virtual community conversation on the fight for voting rights in the state.
ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico -- On Wednesday, New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver joined Democratic candidate for New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District Victor Reyes for a virtual community conversation on the fight for voting rights across the state. The two touched on the importance behind passing HR1 - the For the People Act - and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and looked ahead on what Reyes can get done in Congress to ensure every New Mexican will have their voices heard at the ballot box, not special interests. Here are highlights from the conversation:
When asked about voting rights for rural communities and what can be done on the Congressional level to address the vital need to make voting more accessible for these populations, Toulouse Oliver says: “The reality is that our rural communities are often spread out and often we’re seeing the people who can least afford to take the time to travel long distances and waiting in long lines living in these communities. Here in New Mexico, it’s very diverse in terms of our rural communities, but we’re also talking about our tribal areas, we’re talking about our colonias, we’re talking about these places that really have people who are already socioeconomically disadvantaged and whose voices therefore are even more important at the polls.”
On Victor’s run for Rep. Deb Haaland’s seat, Toulouse Oliver said, “I am very proud of you for putting your name in the hat and running. You’ve been a friend of mine through many campaigns, and you’ve seen what I’ve gone through. So I have a lot of respect for you and everybody for being brave enough to run to throw your hat in this ring”
As the race heats up with Rep. Deb Haaland’s confirmation for Interior Secretary underway, Reyes has received endorsements from Rep. Ritchie Torres, Rep. Mark Takano, Rep. David Cicilline, Equality PAC, the LGBTQ Victory Fund, and local leaders across New Mexico. Watch the full livestream here.
